John 11
Jn 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Jn 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
Jn 11:2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Jn 11:2 It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
Jn 11:3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. Jn 11:3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying," Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick."
Jn 11:4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Jn 11:4 But when Jesus heard this, He said," This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
Jn 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Jn 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
Jn 11:6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Jn 11:6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.
Jn 11:7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Jn 11:7 Then after this He *said to the disciples," Let us go to Judea again."
Jn 11:8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? Jn 11:8 The disciples *said to Him," Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?" Joh 11:8 λέγουσιν αὐτῶ οἱ μαθηταί, ῥαββί, νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ;
Jn 11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. Jn 11:9 Jesus answered," Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
Jn 11:10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. Jn 11:10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
Jn 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Jn 11:11 This He said, and after that He *said to them," Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep."
Jn 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Jn 11:12 The disciples then said to Him," Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
Jn 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Jn 11:13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.
Jn 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. Jn 11:14 So Jesus then said to them plainly," Lazarus is dead, Joh 11:14 τότε οὗν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ, λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν,
Jn 11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. Jn 11:15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him."
Jn 11:16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. Jn 11:16 Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples," Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."
Jn 11:17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Jn 11:17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
Jn 11:18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: Jn 11:18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off; Joh 11:18 ἦν δὲ ἡ βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν ἱεροσολύμων ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε.
Jn 11:19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Jn 11:19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
Jn 11:20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Jn 11:20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.
Jn 11:21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Jn 11:21 Martha then said to Jesus," Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
Jn 11:22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. Jn 11:22 Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You."
Jn 11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Jn 11:23 Jesus *said to her," Your brother will rise again."
Jn 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jn 11:24 Martha *said to Him," I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
Jn 11 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live Jn 11:25 Jesus said to her," I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, Joh 11:25 εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ἰησοῦς, ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή· ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ κἂν ἀποθάνῃ ζήσεται,
Jn 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? Jn 11:26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" Joh 11:26 καὶ πᾶς ὁ ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα· πιστεύεις τοῦτο;
Jn 11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. Jn 11:27 She *said to Him," Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."
Jn 11:28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. Jn 11:28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly," The Teacher is here and is calling for you."
Jn 11:29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. Jn 11:29 And when she heard it, she *got up quickly and was coming to Him.
Jn 11:30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. Jn 11:30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.
Jn 11:31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. Jn 11:31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Jn 11:32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Jn 11:32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him," Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."
Jn 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. Jn 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, Joh 11:33 ἰησοῦς οὗν ὡς εἶδεν αὐτὴν κλαίουσαν καὶ τοὺς συνελθόντας αὐτῇ ἰουδαίους κλαίοντας, ἐνεβριμήσατο τῶ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτόν,
Jn 11:34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jn 11:34 and said," Where have you laid him?" They *said to Him," Lord, come and see."
Jn 11:35 Jesus wept. Jn 11:35 Jesus wept. Joh 11:35 ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ ἰησοῦς.
Jn 11:36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! Jn 11:36 So the Jews were saying," See how He loved him!"
Jn 11:37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? Jn 11:37 But some of them said," Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?" Joh 11:37 τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπαν, οὐκ ἐδύνατο οὖτος ὁ ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὖτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ;
Jn 11:38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jn 11:38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
Jn 11:39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jn 11:39 Jesus *said," Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him," Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days."
Jn 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Jn 11:40 Jesus *said to her," Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" Joh 11:40 λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ ἰησοῦς, οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς ὄψῃ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ θεοῦ;
Jn 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. Jn 11:41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said," Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
Jn 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. Jn 11:42 I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me."
Jn 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. Jn 11:43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice," Lazarus, come forth."
Jn 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Jn 11:44 The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them," Unbind him, and let him go."
Jn 11:45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. Jn 11:45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.
Jn 11:46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. Jn 11:46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Jn 11:47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. Jn 11:47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying," What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs. Joh 11:47 συνήγαγον οὗν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον, καὶ ἔλεγον, τί ποιοῦμεν, ὅτι οὖτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ποιεῖ σημεῖα;
Jn 11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. Jn 11:48 If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
Jn 11:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, Jn 11:49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them," You know nothing at all, Joh 11:49 εἷς δέ τις ἐξ αὐτῶν καϊάφας, ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε οὐδέν,
Jn 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. Jn 11:50 nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."
Jn 11:51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; Jn 11:51 Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, Joh 11:51 τοῦτο δὲ ἀφ᾽ ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εἶπεν, ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου ἐπροφήτευσεν ὅτι ἔμελλεν ἰησοῦς ἀποθνῄσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους,
Jn 11:52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Jn 11:52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
Jn 11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. Jn 11:53 So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.
Jn 11:54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. Jn 11:54 Therefore Jesus no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
Jn 11:55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. Jn 11:55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover to purify themselves.
Jn 11:56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? Jn 11:56 So they were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple," What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?" Joh 11:56 ἐζήτουν οὗν τὸν ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔλεγον μετ᾽ ἀλλήλων ἐν τῶ ἱερῶ ἑστηκότες, τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν; ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν;
Jn 11:57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. Jn 11:57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
