Matthew 16
Mat 16:1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. (kjv) Mat 16:1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. Mat 16:1 καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ φαρισαῖοι καὶ σαδδουκαῖοι πειράζοντες ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν σημεῖον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπιδεῖξαι αὐτοῖς.
Mat 16:2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. (kjv) Mat 16:2 But He replied to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' Mat 16:2 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, [ὀψίας γενομένης λέγετε, εὐδία, πυρράζει γὰρ ὁ οὐρανός·
Mat 16:3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? (kjv) Mat 16:3 And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? Mat 16:3 καὶ πρωΐ, σήμερον χειμών, πυρράζει γὰρ στυγνάζων ὁ οὐρανός. τὸ μὲν πρόσωπον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ γινώσκετε διακρίνειν, τὰ δὲ σημεῖα τῶν καιρῶν οὐ δύνασθε.]
Mat 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. (kjv) Mat 16:4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away. Mat 16:4 γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλὶς σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ, καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον ἰωνᾶ. καὶ καταλιπὼν αὐτοὺς ἀπῆλθεν.
Mat 16:5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. (kjv) Mat 16:5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. Mat 16:5 καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἰς τὸ πέραν ἐπελάθοντο ἄρτους λαβεῖν.
Mat 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. (kjv) Mat 16:6 And Jesus said to them, "Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." Mat 16:6 ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, ὁρᾶτε καὶ προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν φαρισαίων καὶ σαδδουκαίων.
Mat 16:7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. (kjv) Mat 16:7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, "He said that because we did not bring any bread." Mat 16:7 οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγοντες ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν.
Mat 16:8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? (kjv) Mat 16:8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? Mat 16:8 γνοὺς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ὀλιγόπιστοι, ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε;
Mat 16:9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? (kjv) Mat 16:9 Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up? Mat 16:9 οὔπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ μνημονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους τῶν πεντακισχιλίων καὶ πόσους κοφίνους ἐλάβετε;
Mat 16:10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? (kjv) Mat 16:10 Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up? Mat 16:10 οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους τῶν τετρακισχιλίων καὶ πόσας σπυρίδας ἐλάβετε;
Mat 16:11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? (kjv) Mat 16:11 How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." Mat 16:11 πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτων εἶπον ὑμῖν; προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν φαρισαίων καὶ σαδδουκαίων.
Mat 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. (kjv) Mat 16:12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Mat 16:12 τότε συνῆκαν ὅτι οὐκ εἶπεν προσέχειν ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν ἄρτων ἀλλὰ ἀπὸ τῆς διδαχῆς τῶν φαρισαίων καὶ σαδδουκαίων.
Mat 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? (kjv) Mat 16:13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" Mat 16:13 ἐλθὼν δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἰς τὰ μέρη καισαρείας τῆς φιλίππου ἠρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων, τίνα λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;
Mat 16:14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. (kjv) Mat 16:14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." Mat 16:14 οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, οἱ μὲν ἰωάννην τὸν βαπτιστήν, ἄλλοι δὲ ἠλίαν, ἕτεροι δὲ ἰερεμίαν ἢ ἕνα τῶν προφητῶν.
Mat 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? (kjv) Mat 16:15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Mat 16:15 λέγει αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι;
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. (kjv) Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Mat 16:16 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ σίμων πέτρος εἶπεν, σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος.
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. (kjv) Mat 16:17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. Mat 16:17 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῶ, μακάριος εἶ, σίμων βαριωνᾶ, ὅτι σὰρξ καὶ αἷμα οὐκ ἀπεκάλυψέν σοι ἀλλ᾽ ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (kjv) Mat 16:18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. Mat 16:18 κἀγὼ δέ σοι λέγω ὅτι σὺ εἶ πέτρος, καὶ ἐπὶ ταύτῃ τῇ πέτρᾳ οἰκοδομήσω μου τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, καὶ πύλαι ᾅδου οὐ κατισχύσουσιν αὐτῆς.
Mat 16 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (kjv) Mat 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." Mat 16:19 δώσω σοι τὰς κλεῖδας τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν δήσῃς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἔσται δεδεμένον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν λύσῃς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἔσται λελυμένον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.
Mat 16:20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. (kjv) Mat 16:20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. Mat 16:20 τότε διεστείλατο τοῖς μαθηταῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ εἴπωσιν ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός.
Mat 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. (kjv) Mat 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Mat 16:21 ἀπὸ τότε ἤρξατο ὁ ἰησοῦς δεικνύειν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι δεῖ αὐτὸν εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα ἀπελθεῖν καὶ πολλὰ παθεῖν ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ ἀρχιερέων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ἀποκτανθῆναι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθῆναι.
Mat 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. (kjv) Mat 16:22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." Mat 16:22 καὶ προσλαβόμενος αὐτὸν ὁ πέτρος ἤρξατο ἐπιτιμᾶν αὐτῶ λέγων, ἵλεώς σοι, κύριε· οὐ μὴ ἔσται σοι τοῦτο.
Mat 16 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. (kjv) Mat 16:23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." Mat 16:23 ὁ δὲ στραφεὶς εἶπεν τῶ πέτρῳ, ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου, σατανᾶ· σκάνδαλον εἶ ἐμοῦ, ὅτι οὐ φρονεῖς τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ἀλλὰ τὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
Mat 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. (kjv) Mat 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. Mat 16:24 τότε ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, εἴ τις θέλει ὀπίσω μου ἐλθεῖν, ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθείτω μοι.
Mat 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. (kjv) Mat 16:25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Mat 16:25 ὃς γὰρ ἐὰν θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι ἀπολέσει αὐτήν· ὃς δ᾽ ἂν ἀπολέσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν.
Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (kjv) Mat 16:26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Mat 16:26 τί γὰρ ὠφεληθήσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐὰν τὸν κόσμον ὅλον κερδήσῃ τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ζημιωθῇ; ἢ τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ;
Mat 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. (kjv) Mat 16:27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds. Mat 16:27 μέλλει γὰρ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεσθαι ἐν τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ, καὶ τότε ἀποδώσει ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὴν πρᾶξιν αὐτοῦ.
Mat 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.(kjv) Mat 16:28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." Mat 16:28 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰσίν τινες τῶν ὧδε ἑστώτων οἵτινες οὐ μὴ γεύσωνται θανάτου ἕως ἂν ἴδωσιν τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ.
