Acts 26
Act 26:1 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: Act 26:1 Agrippa said to Paul, "You are permitted to speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand and proceeded to make his defense: Act 26:1 ἀγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν παῦλον ἔφη, ἐπιτρέπεταί σοι περὶ σεαυτοῦ λέγειν. τότε ὁ παῦλος ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπελογεῖτο,
Act 26:2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: Act 26:2 "In regard to all the things of which I am accused by the Jews, I consider myself fortunate, King Agrippa, that I am about to make my defense before you today; Act 26:2 περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ ἰουδαίων, βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα, ἥγημαι ἐμαυτὸν μακάριον ἐπὶ σοῦ μέλλων σήμερον ἀπολογεῖσθαι,
Act 26:3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. Act 26:3 especially because you are an expert in all customs and questions among the Jews; therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently. Act 26:3 μάλιστα γνώστην ὄντα σε πάντων τῶν κατὰ ἰουδαίους ἐθῶν τε καὶ ζητημάτων· διὸ δέομαι μακροθύμως ἀκοῦσαί μου.
Act 26:4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; Act 26:4 "So then, all Jews know my manner of life from my youth up, which from the beginning was spent among my own nation and at Jerusalem; Act 26:4 τὴν μὲν οὗν βίωσίν μου [τὴν] ἐκ νεότητος τὴν ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς γενομένην ἐν τῶ ἔθνει μου ἔν τε ἱεροσολύμοις ἴσασι πάντες [οἱ] ἰουδαῖοι,
Act 26:5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. Act 26:5 since they have known about me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that I lived as a Pharisee according to the strictest sect of our religion. Act 26:5 προγινώσκοντές με ἄνωθεν, ἐὰν θέλωσι μαρτυρεῖν, ὅτι κατὰ τὴν ἀκριβεστάτην αἵρεσιν τῆς ἡμετέρας θρησκείας ἔζησα φαρισαῖος.
Act 26:6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God, unto our fathers: Act 26:6 "And now I am standing trial for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers; Act 26:6 καὶ νῦν ἐπ᾽ ἐλπίδι τῆς εἰς τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν ἐπαγγελίας γενομένης ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἕστηκα κρινόμενος,
Act 26:7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. Act 26:7 the promise to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly serve God night and day. And for this hope, O King, I am being accused by Jews. Act 26:7 εἰς ἣν τὸ δωδεκάφυλον ἡμῶν ἐν ἐκτενείᾳ νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν λατρεῦον ἐλπίζει καταντῆσαι· περὶ ἧς ἐλπίδος ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ ἰουδαίων, βασιλεῦ.
Act 26:8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? Act 26:8 "Why is it considered incredible among you people if God does raise the dead? Act 26:8 τί ἄπιστον κρίνεται παρ᾽ ὑμῖν εἰ ὁ θεὸς νεκροὺς ἐγείρει;
Act 26:9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Act 26:9 "So then, I thought to myself that I had to do many things hostile to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Act 26:9 ἐγὼ μὲν οὗν ἔδοξα ἐμαυτῶ πρὸς τὸ ὄνομα ἰησοῦ τοῦ ναζωραίου δεῖν πολλὰ ἐναντία πρᾶξαι·
Act 26:10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. Act 26:10 "And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, but also when they were being put to death I cast my vote against them. Act 26:10 ὃ καὶ ἐποίησα ἐν ἱεροσολύμοις, καὶ πολλούς τε τῶν ἁγίων ἐγὼ ἐν φυλακαῖς κατέκλεισα τὴν παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων ἐξουσίαν λαβών, ἀναιρουμένων τε αὐτῶν κατήνεγκα ψῆφον,
Act 26:11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities. Act 26:11 "And as I punished them often in all the synagogues, I tried to force them to blaspheme; and being furiously enraged at them, I kept pursuing them even to foreign cities. Act 26:11 καὶ κατὰ πάσας τὰς συναγωγὰς πολλάκις τιμωρῶν αὐτοὺς ἠνάγκαζον βλασφημεῖν, περισσῶς τε ἐμμαινόμενος αὐτοῖς ἐδίωκον ἕως καὶ εἰς τὰς ἔξω πόλεις.
Act 26:12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, Act 26:12 "While so engaged as I was journeying to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, Act 26:12 ἐν οἷς πορευόμενος εἰς τὴν δαμασκὸν μετ᾽ ἐξουσίας καὶ ἐπιτροπῆς τῆς τῶν ἀρχιερέων
Act 26:13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. Act 26:13 at midday, O King, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining all around me and those who were journeying with me. Act 26:13 ἡμέρας μέσης κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν εἶδον, βασιλεῦ, οὐρανόθεν ὑπὲρ τὴν λαμπρότητα τοῦ ἡλίου περιλάμψαν με φῶς καὶ τοὺς σὺν ἐμοὶ πορευομένους·
Act 26:14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Act 26:14 "And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew dialect, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.' Act 26:14 πάντων τε καταπεσόντων ἡμῶν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἤκουσα φωνὴν λέγουσαν πρός με τῇ ἑβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ, σαοὺλ σαούλ, τί με διώκεις; σκληρόν σοι πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν.
Act 26:15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. Act 26:15 "And I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. Act 26:15 ἐγὼ δὲ εἶπα, τίς εἶ, κύριε; ὁ δὲ κύριος εἶπεν, ἐγώ εἰμι ἰησοῦς ὃν σὺ διώκεις.
Act 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Act 26:16 'But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; Act 26:16 ἀλλὰ ἀνάστηθι καὶ στῆθι ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας σου· εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ὤφθην σοι, προχειρίσασθαί σε ὑπηρέτην καὶ μάρτυρα ὧν τε εἶδές [με] ὧν τε ὀφθήσομαί σοι,
Act 26:17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, Act 26:17 rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, Act 26:17 ἐξαιρούμενός σε ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν, εἰς οὓς ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω σε
Act 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Act 26:18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.' Act 26:18 ἀνοῖξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν, τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι ἀπὸ σκότους εἰς φῶς καὶ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σατανᾶ ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, τοῦ λαβεῖν αὐτοὺς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν καὶ κλῆρον ἐν τοῖς ἡγιασμένοις πίστει τῇ εἰς ἐμέ.
Act 26:19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: Act 26:19 "So, King Agrippa, I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision, Act 26:19 ὅθεν, βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα, οὐκ ἐγενόμην ἀπειθὴς τῇ οὐρανίῳ ὀπτασίᾳ,
Act 26:20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Act 26:20 but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance. Act 26:20 ἀλλὰ τοῖς ἐν δαμασκῶ πρῶτόν τε καὶ ἱεροσολύμοις, πᾶσάν τε τὴν χώραν τῆς ἰουδαίας καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἀπήγγελλον μετανοεῖν καὶ ἐπιστρέφειν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, ἄξια τῆς μετανοίας ἔργα πράσσοντας.
Act 26:21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. Act 26:21 "For this reason some Jews seized me in the temple and tried to put me to death. Act 26:21 ἕνεκα τούτων με ἰουδαῖοι συλλαβόμενοι [ὄντα] ἐν τῶ ἱερῶ ἐπειρῶντο διαχειρίσασθαι.
Act 26:22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: Act 26:22 "So, having obtained help from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, stating nothing but what the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place; Act 26:22 ἐπικουρίας οὗν τυχὼν τῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης ἕστηκα μαρτυρόμενος μικρῶ τε καὶ μεγάλῳ, οὐδὲν ἐκτὸς λέγων ὧν τε οἱ προφῆται ἐλάλησαν μελλόντων γίνεσθαι καὶ μωϊσῆς,
Act 26:23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. Act 26:23 that the Christ was to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He would be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles." Act 26:23 εἰ παθητὸς ὁ χριστός, εἰ πρῶτος ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν φῶς μέλλει καταγγέλλειν τῶ τε λαῶ καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν.
Act 26:24 And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. Act 26:24 While Paul was saying this in his defense, Festus *said in a loud voice, "Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great learning is driving you mad." Act 26:24 ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἀπολογουμένου ὁ φῆστος μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ φησιν, μαίνῃ, παῦλε· τὰ πολλά σε γράμματα εἰς μανίαν περιτρέπει.
Act 26:25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. Act 26:25 But Paul *said, "I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I utter words of sober truth. Act 26:25 ὁ δὲ παῦλος, οὐ μαίνομαι, φησίν, κράτιστε φῆστε, ἀλλὰ ἀληθείας καὶ σωφροσύνης ῥήματα ἀποφθέγγομαι.
Act 26:26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. Act 26:26 "For the king knows about these matters, and I speak to him also with confidence, since I am persuaded that none of these things escape his notice; for this has not been done in a corner. Act 26:26 ἐπίσταται γὰρ περὶ τούτων ὁ βασιλεύς, πρὸς ὃν καὶ παρρησιαζόμενος λαλῶ· λανθάνειν γὰρ αὐτὸν [τι] τούτων οὐ πείθομαι οὐθέν, οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἐν γωνίᾳ πεπραγμένον τοῦτο.
Act 26:27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. Act 26:27 "King Agrippa, do you believe the Prophets? I know that you do." Act 26:27 πιστεύεις, βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα, τοῖς προφήταις; οἶδα ὅτι πιστεύεις.
Act 26:28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. Act 26:28 Agrippa replied to Paul, "In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian." Act 26:28 ὁ δὲ ἀγρίππας πρὸς τὸν παῦλον, ἐν ὀλίγῳ με πείθεις χριστιανὸν ποιῆσαι.
Act 26:29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds. Act 26:29 And Paul said, "I would wish to God, that whether in a short or long time, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these chains." Act 26:29 ὁ δὲ παῦλος, εὐξαίμην ἂν τῶ θεῶ καὶ ἐν ὀλίγῳ καὶ ἐν μεγάλῳ οὐ μόνον σὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντάς μου σήμερον γενέσθαι τοιούτους ὁποῖος καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι, παρεκτὸς τῶν δεσμῶν τούτων.
Act 26:30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: Act 26:30 The king stood up and the governor and Bernice, and those who were sitting with them, Act 26:30 ἀνέστη τε ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ὁ ἡγεμὼν ἥ τε βερνίκη καὶ οἱ συγκαθήμενοι αὐτοῖς,
Act 26:31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. Act 26:31 and when they had gone aside, they began talking to one another, saying, "This man is not doing anything worthy of death or imprisonment." Act 26:31 καὶ ἀναχωρήσαντες ἐλάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες ὅτι οὐδὲν θανάτου ἢ δεσμῶν ἄξιον [τι] πράσσει ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὖτος.
Act 26:32 Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar. Act 26:32 And Agrippa said to Festus, "This man might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar." Act 26:32 ἀγρίππας δὲ τῶ φήστῳ ἔφη, ἀπολελύσθαι ἐδύνατο ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὖτος εἰ μὴ ἐπεκέκλητο καίσαρα.
