Today's Date: ======= Ecclesiastes 5:1 ============ Ecl 5:1 Guard your steps as you go to the house of God and draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know they are doing evil.(nas) Ecl 5:1 φύλαξον πόδα σου ἐν ᾧ ἐὰν πορεύῃ εἰς οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐγγὺς τοῦ ἀκούειν ὑπὲρ δόμα τῶν ἀφρόνων θυσία σου ὅτι οὔκ εἰσιν εἰδότες τοῦ ποιῆσαι κακόν (lxx) Ecl 5:1 [Custodi pedem tuum ingrediens domum Dei, et appropinqua ut audias. Multo enim melior est obedientia quam stultorum victimæ, qui nesciunt quid faciunt mali.](vulgate) 17 ׃4 שְׁמֹ֣ר *רגליך **רַגְלְךָ֗ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר תֵּלֵךְ֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְקָר֣וֹב לִשְׁמֹ֔עַ מִתֵּ֥ת הַכְּסִילִ֖ים זָ֑בַח כִּֽי־אֵינָ֥ם יוֹדְעִ֖ים לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָֽע׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:1 Bewahre deinen Fuß, wenn du zum Hause Gottes gehst, und komme, daß du hörst. Das ist besser als der Narren Opfer; denn sie wissen nicht, was sie Böses tun.(dhs) Ecl 5:1 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:2 ============ Ecl 5:2 Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few.(nas) Ecl 5:2 μὴ σπεῦδε ἐπὶ στόματί σου καὶ καρδία σου μὴ ταχυνάτω τοῦ ἐξενέγκαι λόγον πρὸ προσώπου τοῦ θεοῦ ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ καὶ σὺ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἔστωσαν οἱ λόγοι σου ὀλίγοι (lxx) Ecl 5:2 [Ne temere quid loquaris, neque cor tuum sit velox ad proferendum sermonem coram Deo. Deus enim in cælo, et tu super terram; idcirco sint pauci sermones tui.(vulgate) 1 ׃5 אַל־תְּבַהֵ֨ל עַל־פִּ֜יךָ וְלִבְּךָ֧ אַל־יְמַהֵ֛ר לְהוֹצִ֥יא דָבָ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים בַּשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְאַתָּ֣ה עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ עַֽ[t]ל־כֵּ֛ן יִהְי֥וּ דְבָרֶ֖יךָ מְעַטִּֽים׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:2 Sei nicht schnell mit deinem Munde und laß dein Herz nicht eilen, was zu reden vor Gott; denn Gott ist im Himmel, und du auf Erden; darum laß deiner Worte wenig sein.(dhs) Ecl 5:2 Do not be rash with your mouth, And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; Therefore let your words be few.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:3 ============ Ecl 5:3 For the dream comes through much effort and the voice of a fool through many words.(nas) Ecl 5:3 ὅτι παραγίνεται ἐνύπνιον ἐν πλήθει περισπασμοῦ καὶ φωνὴ ἄφρονος ἐν πλήθει λόγων (lxx) Ecl 5:3 Multas curas sequuntur somnia, et in multis sermonibus invenietur stultitia.(vulgate) 2 ׃5 כִּ֛י בָּ֥א הַחֲל֖וֹם בְּרֹ֣ב עִנְיָ֑ן וְק֥וֹל כְּסִ֖יל בְּרֹ֥ב דְּבָרִֽים׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:3 Denn wo viel Sorgen ist, da kommen Träume; und wo viel Worte sind, da hört man den Narren.(dhs) Ecl 5:3 For a dream comes through much activity, And a fool's voice is known by his many words.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:4 ============ Ecl 5:4 When you make a vow to God, do not be late in paying it; for He takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow!(nas) Ecl 5:4 καθὼς ἂν εὔξῃ εὐχὴν τῷ θεῷ μὴ χρονίσῃς τοῦ ἀποδοῦναι αὐτήν ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν θέλημα ἐν ἄφροσιν σὺν ὅσα ἐὰν εὔξῃ ἀπόδος (lxx) Ecl 5:4 Si quid vovisti Deo, ne moreris reddere: displicet enim ei infidelis et stulta promissio, sed quodcumque voveris redde:(vulgate) 3 ׃5 כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ תִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר לֽ͏ֵאלֹהִ֗ים אַל־תְּאַחֵר֙ לְשַׁלְּמ֔וֹ כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין חֵ֖פֶץ בַּכְּסִילִ֑ים אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־תִּדֹּ֖ר שַׁלֵּֽם׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:4 Wenn du Gott ein Gelübde tust, so verzieh nicht, es zu halten; denn er hat kein Gefallen an den Narren. Was du gelobst, das halte.(dhs) Ecl 5:4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed--(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:5 ============ Ecl 5:5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.(nas) Ecl 5:5 ἀγαθὸν τὸ μὴ εὔξασθαί σε ἢ τὸ εὔξασθαί σε καὶ μὴ ἀποδοῦναι (lxx) Ecl 5:5 multoque melius est non vovere, quam post votum promissa non reddere.(vulgate) 4 ׃5 ט֖וֹב אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־תִדֹּ֑ר מִשֶׁתִּדּ֖וֹר וְלֹ֥א תְשַׁלֵּֽם׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:5 Es ist besser, du gelobst nichts, denn daß du nicht hältst, was du gelobst.(dhs) Ecl 5:5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:6 ============ Ecl 5:6 Do not let your speech cause you to sin and do not say in the presence of the messenger of God that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry on account of your voice and destroy the work of your hands?(nas) Ecl 5:6 μὴ δῷς τὸ στόμα σου τοῦ ἐξαμαρτῆσαι τὴν σάρκα σου καὶ μὴ εἴπῃς πρὸ προσώπου τοῦ θεοῦ ὅτι ἄγνοιά ἐστιν ἵνα μὴ ὀργισθῇ ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ φωνῇ σου καὶ διαφθείρῃ τὰ ποιήματα χειρῶν σου (lxx) Ecl 5:6 Ne dederis os tuum ut peccare facias carnem tuam, neque dicas coram angelo: Non est providentia: ne forte iratus Deus contra sermones tuos dissipet cuncta opera manuum tuarum.(vulgate) 5 ׃5 אַל־תִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־פִּ֙יךָ֙ לַחֲטִ֣יא אֶת־בְּשָׂרֶ֔ךָ וְאַל־תֹּאמַר֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמַּלְאָ֔ךְ כִּ֥י שְׁגָגָ֖ה הִ֑יא לָ֣מָּה יִקְצֹ֤ף הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ עַל־קוֹלֶ֔ךָ וְחִבֵּ֖ל אֶת־מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדֶֽיךָ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:6 Laß deinem Mund nicht zu, daß er dein Fleisch verführe; und sprich vor dem Engel nicht: Es ist ein Versehen. Gott möchte erzürnen über deine Stimme und verderben alle Werke deiner Hände.(dhs) Ecl 5:6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:7 ============ Ecl 5:7 For in many dreams and in many words there is emptiness. Rather, fear God.(nas) Ecl 5:7 ὅτι ἐν πλήθει ἐνυπνίων καὶ ματαιότητες καὶ λόγοι πολλοί ὅτι σὺν τὸν θεὸν φοβοῦ (lxx) Ecl 5:7 Ubi multa sunt somnia, plurimæ sunt vanitates, et sermones innumeri; tu vero Deum time.]~(vulgate) 6 ׃5 כִּ֣י בְרֹ֤ב חֲלֹמוֹת֙ וַהֲבָלִ֔ים וּדְבָרִ֖ים הַרְבֵּ֑ה כִּ֥י אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יְרָֽא׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:7 Wo viel Träume sind, da ist Eitelkeit und viel Worte; aber fürchte du Gott.(dhs) Ecl 5:7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:8 ============ Ecl 5:8 If you see oppression of the poor and denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be shocked at the sight; for one official watches over another official, and there are higher officials over them.(nas) Ecl 5:8 ἐὰν συκοφαντίαν πένητος καὶ ἁρπαγὴν κρίματος καὶ δικαιοσύνης ἴδῃς ἐν χώρᾳ μὴ θαυμάσῃς ἐπὶ τῷ πράγματι ὅτι ὑψηλὸς ἐπάνω ὑψηλοῦ φυλάξαι καὶ ὑψηλοὶ ἐπ᾽ αὐτούς (lxx) Ecl 5:8 [Si videris calumnias egenorum, et violenta judicia, et subverti justitiam in provincia, non mireris super hoc negotio: quia excelso excelsior est alius, et super hos quoque eminentiores sunt alii;(vulgate) 7 ׃5 אִם־עֹ֣שֶׁק רָ֠שׁ וְגֵ֨זֶל מִשְׁפָּ֤ט וָצֶ֙דֶק֙ תִּרְאֶ֣ה בַמְּדִינָ֔ה אַל־תִּתְמַ֖הּ עַל־הַחֵ֑פֶץ כִּ֣י גָבֹ֜הַּ מֵעַ֤ל גָּבֹ֙הַ֙ שֹׁמֵ֔ר וּגְבֹהִ֖ים עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:8 Siehst du dem Armen Unrecht tun und Recht und Gerechtigkeit im Lande wegreißen, wundere dich des Vornehmens nicht; denn es ist ein hoher Hüter über den Hohen und sind noch Höhere über die beiden.(dhs) Ecl 5:8 If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:9 ============ Ecl 5:9 After all, a king who cultivates the field is an advantage to the land.(nas) Ecl 5:9 καὶ περισσεία γῆς ἐν παντί ἐστι βασιλεὺς τοῦ ἀγροῦ εἰργασμένου (lxx) Ecl 5:9 et insuper universæ terræ rex imperat servienti.(vulgate) 8 ׃5 וְיִתְר֥וֹן אֶ֖רֶץ בַּכֹּ֣ל *היא **ה֑וּא מֶ֥לֶךְ לְשָׂדֶ֖ה נֶעֱבָֽד׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:9 Und immer ist's Gewinn für ein Land, wenn ein König da ist für das Feld, das man baut.(dhs) Ecl 5:9 Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:10 ============ Ecl 5:10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.(nas) Ecl 5:10 ἀγαπῶν ἀργύριον οὐ πλησθήσεται ἀργυρίου καὶ τίς ἠγάπησεν ἐν πλήθει αὐτῶν γένημα καί γε τοῦτο ματαιότης (lxx) Ecl 5:10 Avarus non implebitur pecunia, et qui amat divitias fructum non capiet ex eis; et hoc ergo vanitas.(vulgate) 9 ׃5 אֹהֵ֥ב כֶּ֙סֶף֙ לֹא־יִשְׂבַּ֣ע כֶּ֔סֶף וּמִֽי־אֹהֵ֥ב בֶּהָמ֖וֹן לֹ֣א תְבוּאָ֑ה גַּם־זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:10 Wer Geld liebt, wird Geldes nimmer satt; und wer Reichtum liebt, wird keinen Nutzen davon haben. Das ist auch eitel.(dhs) Ecl 5:10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:11 ============ Ecl 5:11 When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what is the advantage to their owners except to look on?(nas) Ecl 5:11 ἐν πλήθει τῆς ἀγαθωσύνης ἐπληθύνθησαν ἔσθοντες αὐτήν καὶ τί ἀνδρεία τῷ παρ᾽ αὐτῆς ὅτι ἀλλ᾽ ἢ τοῦ ὁρᾶν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ (lxx) Ecl 5:11 Ubi multæ sunt opes, multi et qui comedunt eas. Et quid prodest possessori, nisi quod cernit divitias oculis suis?(vulgate) 10 ׃5 בִּרְבוֹת֙ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה רַבּ֖וּ אוֹכְלֶ֑יהָ וּמַה־כִּשְׁרוֹן֙ לִבְעָלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֖י אִם־*ראית **רְא֥וּת עֵינָֽיו׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:11 Denn wo viel Guts ist, da sind viele, die es essen; und was genießt davon, der es hat, außer daß er's mit Augen ansieht?(dhs) Ecl 5:11 When goods increase, They increase who eat them; So what profit have the owners Except to see them with their eyes?(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:12 ============ Ecl 5:12 The sleep of the working man is pleasant, whether he eats little or much; but the full stomach of the rich man does not allow him to sleep.(nas) Ecl 5:12 γλυκὺς ὕπνος τοῦ δούλου εἰ ὀλίγον καὶ εἰ πολὺ φάγεται καὶ τῷ ἐμπλησθέντι τοῦ πλουτῆσαι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀφίων αὐτὸν τοῦ ὑπνῶσαι (lxx) Ecl 5:12 Dulcis est somnus operanti, sive parum sive multum comedat; saturitas autem divitis non sinit eum dormire.]~(vulgate) 11 ׃5 מְתוּקָה֙ שְׁנַ֣ת הָעֹבֵ֔ד אִם־מְעַ֥ט וְאִם־הַרְבֵּ֖ה יֹאכֵ֑ל וְהַשָּׂבָע֙ לֶֽעָשִׁ֔יר אֵינֶ֛נּוּ מַנִּ֥יחַֽ ל֖וֹ לִישֽׁוֹן׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:12 Wer arbeitet, dem ist der Schaf süß, er habe wenig oder viel gegessen; aber die Fülle des Reichen läßt ihn nicht schlafen.(dhs) Ecl 5:12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, Whether he eats little or much; But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:13 ============ Ecl 5:13 There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: riches being hoarded by their owner to his hurt.(nas) Ecl 5:13 ἔστιν ἀρρωστία ἣν εἶδον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον πλοῦτον φυλασσόμενον τῷ παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ εἰς κακίαν αὐτοῦ (lxx) Ecl 5:13 [Est et alia infirmitas pessima quam vidi sub sole: divitiæ conservatæ in malum domini sui.(vulgate) 12 ׃5 יֵ֚שׁ רָעָ֣ה חוֹלָ֔ה רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ עֹ֛שֶׁר שָׁמ֥וּר לִבְעָלָ֖יו לְרָעָתֽוֹ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:13 Es ist ein böses Übel, das ich sah unter der Sonne: Reichtum, behalten zum Schaden dem, der ihn hat.(dhs) Ecl 5:13 There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:14 ============ Ecl 5:14 When those riches were lost through a bad investment and he had fathered a son, then there was nothing to support him.(nas) Ecl 5:14 καὶ ἀπολεῖται ὁ πλοῦτος ἐκεῖνος ἐν περισπασμῷ πονηρῷ καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱόν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ οὐδέν (lxx) Ecl 5:14 Pereunt enim in afflictione pessima: generavit filium qui in summa egestate erit.(vulgate) 13 ׃5 וְאָבַ֛ד הָעֹ֥שֶׁר הַה֖וּא בְּעִנְיַ֣ן רָ֑ע וְהוֹלִ֣יד בֵּ֔ן וְאֵ֥ין בְּיָד֖וֹ מְאֽוּמָה׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:14 Denn der Reiche kommt um mit großem Jammer; und so er einen Sohn gezeugt hat, dem bleibt nichts in der Hand.(dhs) Ecl 5:14 But those riches perish through misfortune; When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:15 ============ Ecl 5:15 As he had come naked from his mother's womb, so will he return as he came. He will take nothing from the fruit of his labor that he can carry in his hand.(nas) Ecl 5:15 καθὼς ἐξῆλθεν ἀπὸ γαστρὸς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ γυμνός ἐπιστρέψει τοῦ πορευθῆναι ὡς ἥκει καὶ οὐδὲν οὐ λήμψεται ἐν μόχθῳ αὐτοῦ ἵνα πορευθῇ ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ (lxx) Ecl 5:15 Sicut egressus est nudus de utero matris suæ, sic revertetur, et nihil auferet secum de labore suo.(vulgate) 14 ׃5 כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יָצָא֙ מִבֶּ֣טֶן אִמּ֔וֹ עָר֛וֹם יָשׁ֥וּב לָלֶ֖כֶת כְּשֶׁבָּ֑א וּמְא֙וּמָה֙ לֹא־יִשָּׂ֣א בַעֲמָל֔וֹ שֶׁיֹּלֵ֖ךְ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:15 Wie er nackt ist von seine Mutter Leibe gekommen, so fährt er wieder hin, wie er gekommen ist, und nimmt nichts mit sich von seiner Arbeit in seiner Hand, wenn er hinfährt.(dhs) Ecl 5:15 As he came from his mother's womb, naked shall he return, To go as he came; And he shall take nothing from his labor Which he may carry away in his hand.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 5:16 ============ Ecl 5:16 This also is a grievous evil--exactly as a man is born, thus will he die. So what is the advantage to him who toils for the wind?(nas) Ecl 5:16 καί γε τοῦτο πονηρὰ ἀρρωστία ὥσπερ γὰρ παρεγένετο οὕτως καὶ ἀπελεύσεται καὶ τίς περισσεία αὐτῷ ᾗ μοχθεῖ εἰς ἄνεμον (lxx) Ecl 5:16 Miserabilis prorsus infirmitas: quomodo venit, sic revertetur. Quid ergo prodest ei quod laboravit in ventum?(vulgate) 15 ׃5 וְגַם־זֹה֙ רָעָ֣ה חוֹלָ֔ה כָּל־עֻמַּ֥ת שֶׁבָּ֖א כֵּ֣ן יֵלֵ֑ךְ וּמַה־יִּתְר֣וֹן ל֔וֹ שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל לָרֽוּחַ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 5:16 Das ist ein böses Übel, daß er hinfährt, wie er gekommen ist. Was hilft's ihm denn, daß er in den Wind gearbeitet hat?(dhs) Ecl 5:16 And this also is a severe evil-- Just exactly as he came, so shall he go.
