Today's Date: ======= Ecclesiastes 10:1 ============ Ecl 10:1 Dead flies make a perfumer's oil stink, so a little foolishness is weightier than wisdom and honor.(nas) Ecl 10:1 μυῖαι θανατοῦσαι σαπριοῦσιν σκευασίαν ἐλαίου ἡδύσματος τίμιον ὀλίγον σοφίας ὑπὲρ δόξαν ἀφροσύνης μεγάλης (lxx) Ecl 10:1 [Muscæ morientes perdunt suavitatem unguenti. Pretiosior est sapientia et gloria, parva et ad tempus stultitia.(vulgate) 1 ׃10 זְב֣וּבֵי מָ֔וֶת יַבְאִ֥ישׁ יַבִּ֖יעַ שֶׁ֣מֶן רוֹקֵ֑חַ יָקָ֛ר מֵחָכְמָ֥ה מִכָּב֖וֹד סִכְל֥וּת מְעָֽט׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:1 Schädliche Fliegen verderben gute Salben; also wiegt ein wenig Torheit schwerer denn Weisheit und Ehre.(dhs) Ecl 10:1 Dead flies putrefy the perfumer's ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:2 ============ Ecl 10:2 A wise man's heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man's heart directs him toward the left.(nas) Ecl 10:2 καρδία σοφοῦ εἰς δεξιὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ καρδία ἄφρονος εἰς ἀριστερὸν αὐτοῦ (lxx) Ecl 10:2 Cor sapientis in dextera ejus, et cor stulti in sinistra illius.(vulgate) 2 ׃10 לֵ֤ב חָכָם֙ לִֽימִינ֔וֹ וְלֵ֥ב כְּסִ֖יל לִשְׂמֹאלֽוֹ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:2 Des Weisen Herz ist zu seiner Rechten; aber des Narren Herz ist zu seiner Linken.(dhs) Ecl 10:2 A wise man's heart is at his right hand, But a fool's heart at his left.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:3 ============ Ecl 10:3 Even when the fool walks along the road, his sense is lacking and he demonstrates to everyone that he is a fool.(nas) Ecl 10:3 καί γε ἐν ὁδῷ ὅταν ἄφρων πορεύηται καρδία αὐτοῦ ὑστερήσει καὶ ἃ λογιεῖται πάντα ἀφροσύνη ἐστίν (lxx) Ecl 10:3 Sed et in via stultus ambulans, cum ipse insipiens sit, omnes stultos æstimat.(vulgate) 3 ׃10 וְגַם־בַּדֶּ֛רֶךְ *כשהסכל **כְּשֶׁסָּכָ֥ל הֹלֵ֖ךְ לִבּ֣וֹ חָסֵ֑ר וְאָמַ֥ר לַכֹּ֖ל סָכָ֥ל הֽוּא׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:3 Auch ob der Narr selbst närrisch ist in seinem Tun, doch hält er jedermann für einen Narren.(dhs) Ecl 10:3 Even when a fool walks along the way, He lacks wisdom, And he shows everyone that he is a fool.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:4 ============ Ecl 10:4 If the ruler's temper rises against you, do not abandon your position, because composure allays great offenses.(nas) Ecl 10:4 ἐὰν πνεῦμα τοῦ ἐξουσιάζοντος ἀναβῇ ἐπὶ σέ τόπον σου μὴ ἀφῇς ὅτι ἴαμα καταπαύσει ἁμαρτίας μεγάλας (lxx) Ecl 10:4 Si spiritus potestatem habentis ascenderit super te, locum tuum ne demiseris, quia curatio faciet cessare peccata maxima.]~(vulgate) 4 ׃10 אִם־ר֤וּחַ הַמּוֹשֵׁל֙ תַּעֲלֶ֣ה עָלֶ֔יךָ מְקוֹמְךָ֖ אַל־תַּנַּ֑ח כִּ֣י מַרְפֵּ֔א יַנִּ֖יחַ חֲטָאִ֥ים גְּדוֹלִֽים׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:4 Wenn eines Gewaltigen Zorn wider dich ergeht, so laß dich nicht entrüsten; denn Nachlassen stillt großes Unglück.(dhs) Ecl 10:4 If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, Do not leave your post; For conciliation pacifies great offenses.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:5 ============ Ecl 10:5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, like an error which goes forth from the ruler--(nas) Ecl 10:5 ἔστιν πονηρία ἣν εἶδον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον ὡς ἀκούσιον ὃ ἐξῆλθεν ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ ἐξουσιάζοντος (lxx) Ecl 10:5 [Est malum quod vidi sub sole, quasi per errorem egrediens a facie principis:(vulgate) 5 ׃10 יֵ֣שׁ רָעָ֔ה רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ כִּשְׁגָגָ֕ה שֶׁיֹּצָ֖א מִלִּפְנֵ֥י הַשַּׁלִּֽיט׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:5 Es ist ein Unglück, das ich sah unter der Sonne, gleich einem Versehen, das vom Gewaltigen ausgeht:(dhs) Ecl 10:5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error proceeding from the ruler:(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:6 ============ Ecl 10:6 folly is set in many exalted places while rich men sit in humble places.(nas) Ecl 10:6 ἐδόθη ὁ ἄφρων ἐν ὕψεσι μεγάλοις καὶ πλούσιοι ἐν ταπεινῷ καθήσονται (lxx) Ecl 10:6 positum stultum in dignitate sublimi, et divites sedere deorsum.(vulgate) 6 ׃10 נִתַּ֣ן הַסֶּ֔כֶל בַּמְּרוֹמִ֖ים רַבִּ֑ים וַעֲשִׁירִ֖ים בַּשֵּׁ֥פֶל יֵשֵֽׁבוּ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:6 daß ein Narr sitzt in großer Würde, und die Reichen in Niedrigkeit sitzen.(dhs) Ecl 10:6 Folly is set in great dignity, While the rich sit in a lowly place.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:7 ============ Ecl 10:7 I have seen slaves riding on horses and princes walking like slaves on the land.(nas) Ecl 10:7 εἶδον δούλους ἐφ᾽ ἵππους καὶ ἄρχοντας πορευομένους ὡς δούλους ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς (lxx) Ecl 10:7 Vidi servos in equis, et principes ambulantes super terram quasi servos.(vulgate) 7 ׃10 רָאִ֥יתִי עֲבָדִ֖ים עַל־סוּסִ֑ים וְשָׂרִ֛ים הֹלְכִ֥ים כַּעֲבָדִ֖ים עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:7 Ich sah Knechte auf Rossen, und Fürsten zu Fuß gehen wie Knechte.(dhs) Ecl 10:7 I have seen servants on horses, While princes walk on the ground like servants.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:8 ============ Ecl 10:8 He who digs a pit may fall into it, and a serpent may bite him who breaks through a wall.(nas) Ecl 10:8 ὁ ὀρύσσων βόθρον ἐν αὐτῷ ἐμπεσεῖται καὶ καθαιροῦντα φραγμόν δήξεται αὐτὸν ὄφις (lxx) Ecl 10:8 Qui fodit foveam incidet in eam, et qui dissipat sepem mordebit eum coluber.(vulgate) 8 ׃10 חֹפֵ֥ר גּוּמָּ֖ץ בּ֣וֹ יִפּ֑וֹל וּפֹרֵ֥ץ גָּדֵ֖ר יִשְּׁכֶ֥נּוּ נָחָֽשׁ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:8 Aber wer eine Grube macht, der wird selbst hineinfallen; und wer den Zaun zerreißt, den wird eine Schlange stechen.(dhs) Ecl 10:8 He who digs a pit will fall into it, And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:9 ============ Ecl 10:9 He who quarries stones may be hurt by them, and he who splits logs may be endangered by them.(nas) Ecl 10:9 ἐξαίρων λίθους διαπονηθήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς σχίζων ξύλα κινδυνεύσει ἐν αὐτοῖς (lxx) Ecl 10:9 Qui transfert lapides affligetur in eis, et qui scindit ligna vulnerabitur ab eis.(vulgate) 9 ׃10 מַסִּ֣יעַ אֲבָנִ֔ים יֵעָצֵ֖ב בָּהֶ֑ם בּוֹקֵ֥עַ עֵצִ֖ים יִסָּ֥כֶן בָּֽם׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:9 Wer Steine wegwälzt, der wird Mühe damit haben; und wer Holz spaltet, der wird davon verletzt werden.(dhs) Ecl 10:9 He who quarries stones may be hurt by them, And he who splits wood may be endangered by it.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:10 ============ Ecl 10:10 If the axe is dull and he does not sharpen its edge, then he must exert more strength. Wisdom has the advantage of giving success.(nas) Ecl 10:10 ἐὰν ἐκπέσῃ τὸ σιδήριον καὶ αὐτὸς πρόσωπον ἐτάραξεν καὶ δυνάμεις δυναμώσει καὶ περισσεία τοῦ ἀνδρείου σοφία (lxx) Ecl 10:10 Si retusum fuerit ferrum, et hoc non ut prius, sed hebetatum fuerit, multo labore exacuetur, et post industriam sequetur sapientia.(vulgate) 10 ׃10 אִם־קֵהָ֣ה הַבַּרְזֶ֗ל וְהוּא֙ לֹא־פָנִ֣ים קִלְקַ֔ל וַחֲיָלִ֖ים יְגַבֵּ֑ר וְיִתְר֥וֹן *הכשיר **הַכְשֵׁ֖ר חָכְמָֽה׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:10 Wenn ein Eisen stumpf wird und an der Schneide ungeschliffen bleibt, muß man's mit Macht wieder schärfen; also folgt auch Weisheit dem Fleiß.(dhs) Ecl 10:10 If the ax is dull, And one does not sharpen the edge, Then he must use more strength; But wisdom brings success.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:11 ============ Ecl 10:11 If the serpent bites before being charmed, there is no profit for the charmer.(nas) Ecl 10:11 ἐὰν δάκῃ ὁ ὄφις ἐν οὐ ψιθυρισμῷ καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν περισσεία τῷ ἐπᾴδοντι (lxx) Ecl 10:11 Si mordeat serpens in silentio, nihil eo minus habet qui occulte detrahit.(vulgate) 11 ׃10 אִם־יִשֹּׁ֥ךְ הַנָּחָ֖שׁ בְּלוֹא־לָ֑חַשׁ וְאֵ֣ין יִתְר֔וֹן לְבַ֖עַל הַלָּשֽׁוֹן׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:11 Ein Schwätzer ist nichts Besseres als eine Schlange, die ohne Beschwörung sticht.(dhs) Ecl 10:11 A serpent may bite when it is not charmed; The babbler is no different.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:12 ============ Ecl 10:12 Words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him;(nas) Ecl 10:12 λόγοι στόματος σοφοῦ χάρις καὶ χείλη ἄφρονος καταποντιοῦσιν αὐτόν (lxx) Ecl 10:12 Verba oris sapientis gratia, et labia insipientis præcipitabunt eum;(vulgate) 12 ׃10 דִּבְרֵ֥י פִי־חָכָ֖ם חֵ֑ן וְשִׂפְת֥וֹת כְּסִ֖יל תְּבַלְּעֶֽנּוּ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:12 Die Worte aus dem Mund eines Weisen sind holdselig; aber des Narren Lippen verschlingen ihn selbst.(dhs) Ecl 10:12 The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up;(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:13 ============ Ecl 10:13 the beginning of his talking is folly and the end of it is wicked madness.(nas) Ecl 10:13 ἀρχὴ λόγων στόματος αὐτοῦ ἀφροσόνη καὶ ἐσχάτη στόματος αὐτοῦ περιφέρεια πονηρά (lxx) Ecl 10:13 initium verborum ejus stultitia, et novissimum oris illius error pessimus.(vulgate) 13 ׃10 תְּחִלַּ֥ת דִּבְרֵי־פִ֖יהוּ סִכְל֑וּת וְאַחֲרִ֣ית פִּ֔יהוּ הוֹלֵל֖וּת רָעָֽה׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:13 Der Anfang seiner Worte ist Narrheit, und das Ende ist schädliche Torheit.(dhs) Ecl 10:13 The words of his mouth begin with foolishness, And the end of his talk is raving madness.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:14 ============ Ecl 10:14 Yet the fool multiplies words. No man knows what will happen, and who can tell him what will come after him?(nas) Ecl 10:14 καὶ ὁ ἄφρων πληθύνει λόγους οὐκ ἔγνω ὁ ἄνθρωπος τί τὸ γενόμενον καὶ τί τὸ ἐσόμενον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ τίς ἀναγγελεῖ αὐτῷ (lxx) Ecl 10:14 Stultus verba multiplicat. Ignorat homo quid ante se fuerit; et quid post se futurum sit, quis ei poterit indicare?(vulgate) 14 ׃10 וְהַסָּכָ֖ל יַרְבֶּ֣ה דְבָרִ֑ים לֹא־יֵדַ֤ע הָאָדָם֙ מַה־שֶׁיִּֽהְיֶ֔ה וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר יִֽהְיֶה֙ מֵֽאַחֲרָ֔יו מִ֖י יַגִּ֥יד לֽוֹ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:14 Ein Narr macht viele Worte; aber der Mensch weiß nicht, was gewesen ist, und wer will ihm sagen, was nach ihm werden wird?(dhs) Ecl 10:14 A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him?(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:15 ============ Ecl 10:15 The toil of a fool so wearies him that he does not even know how to go to a city.(nas) Ecl 10:15 μόχθος τῶν ἀφρόνων κοπώσει αὐτούς ὃς οὐκ ἔγνω τοῦ πορευθῆναι εἰς πόλιν (lxx) Ecl 10:15 Labor stultorum affliget eos, qui nesciunt in urbem pergere.]~(vulgate) 15 ׃10 עֲמַ֥ל הַכְּסִילִ֖ים תְּיַגְּעֶ֑נּוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יָדַ֖ע לָלֶ֥כֶת אֶל־עִֽיר׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:15 Die Arbeit der Narren wird ihnen sauer, weil sie nicht wissen in die Stadt zu gehen.(dhs) Ecl 10:15 The labor of fools wearies them, For they do not even know how to go to the city!(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:16 ============ Ecl 10:16 Woe to you, O land, whose king is a lad and whose princes feast in the morning.(nas) Ecl 10:16 οὐαί σοι πόλις ἧς ὁ βασιλεύς σου νεώτερος καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντές σου ἐν πρωίᾳ ἐσθίουσιν (lxx) Ecl 10:16 [Væ tibi, terra, cujus rex puer est, et cujus principes mane comedunt.(vulgate) 16 ׃10 אִֽי־לָ֣ךְ אֶ֔רֶץ שֶׁמַּלְכֵּ֖ךְ נָ֑עַר וְשָׂרַ֖יִךְ בַּבֹּ֥קֶר יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:16 Weh dir, Land, dessen König ein Kind ist, und dessen Fürsten in der Frühe speisen!(dhs) Ecl 10:16 Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, And your princes feast in the morning!(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:17 ============ Ecl 10:17 Blessed are you, O land, whose king is of nobility and whose princes eat at the appropriate time--for strength and not for drunkenness.(nas) Ecl 10:17 μακαρία σύ γῆ ἧς ὁ βασιλεύς σου υἱὸς ἐλευθέρων καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντές σου πρὸς καιρὸν φάγονται ἐν δυνάμει καὶ οὐκ αἰσχυνθήσονται (lxx) Ecl 10:17 Beata terra cujus rex nobilis est, et cujus principes vescuntur in tempore suo, ad reficiendum, et non ad luxuriam.(vulgate) 17 ׃10 אַשְׁרֵ֣יךְ אֶ֔רֶץ שֶׁמַּלְכֵּ֖ךְ בֶּן־חוֹרִ֑ים וְשָׂרַ֙יִךְ֙ בָּעֵ֣ת יֹאכֵ֔לוּ בִּגְבוּרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א בַשְּׁתִֽי׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:17 Wohl dir, Land, dessen König edel ist, und dessen Fürsten zu rechter Zeit speisen, zur Stärke und nicht zur Lust!(dhs) Ecl 10:17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, And your princes feast at the proper time-- For strength and not for drunkenness!(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:18 ============ Ecl 10:18 Through indolence the rafters sag, and through slackness the house leaks.(nas) Ecl 10:18 ἐν ὀκνηρίαις ταπεινωθήσεται ἡ δόκωσις καὶ ἐν ἀργίᾳ χειρῶν στάξει ἡ οἰκία (lxx) Ecl 10:18 In pigritiis humiliabitur contignatio, et in infirmitate manuum perstillabit domus.(vulgate) 18 ׃10 בַּעֲצַלְתַּ֖יִם יִמַּ֣ךְ הַמְּקָרֶ֑ה וּבְשִׁפְל֥וּת יָדַ֖יִם יִדְלֹ֥ף הַבָּֽיִת׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:18 Denn durch Faulheit sinken die Balken, und durch lässige Hände wird das Haus triefend.(dhs) Ecl 10:18 Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:19 ============ Ecl 10:19 Men prepare a meal for enjoyment, and wine makes life merry, and money is the answer to everything.(nas) Ecl 10:19 εἰς γέλωτα ποιοῦσιν ἄρτον καὶ οἶνος εὐφραίνει ζῶντας καὶ τοῦ ἀργυρίου ἐπακούσεται σὺν τὰ πάντα (lxx) Ecl 10:19 In risum faciunt panem et vinum ut epulentur viventes; et pecuniæ obediunt omnia.(vulgate) 19 ׃10 לִשְׂחוֹק֙ עֹשִׂ֣ים לֶ֔חֶם וְיַ֖יִן יְשַׂמַּ֣ח חַיִּ֑ים וְהַכֶּ֖סֶף יַעֲנֶ֥ה אֶת־הַכֹּֽל׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:19 Das macht, sie halten Mahlzeiten, um zu lachen, und der Wein muß die Lebendigen erfreuen, und das Geld muß ihnen alles zuwege bringen.(dhs) Ecl 10:19 A feast is made for laughter, And wine makes merry; But money answers everything.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 10:20 ============ Ecl 10:20 Furthermore, in your bedchamber do not curse a king, and in your sleeping rooms do not curse a rich man, for a bird of the heavens will carry the sound and the winged creature will make the matter known.(nas) Ecl 10:20 καί γε ἐν συνειδήσει σου βασιλέα μὴ καταράσῃ καὶ ἐν ταμιείοις κοιτώνων σου μὴ καταράσῃ πλούσιον ὅτι πετεινὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀποίσει σὺν τὴν φωνήν καὶ ὁ ἔχων τὰς πτέρυγας ἀπαγγελεῖ λόγον (lxx) Ecl 10:20 In cogitatione tua regi ne detrahas, et in secreto cubiculi tui ne maledixeris diviti: quia et aves cæli portabunt vocem tuam, et qui habet pennas annuntiabit sententiam.](vulgate) 20 ׃10 גַּ֣ם בְּמַדָּֽעֲךָ֗ מֶ֚לֶךְ אַל־תְּקַלֵּ֔ל וּבְחַדְרֵי֙ מִשְׁכָּ֣בְךָ֔ אַל־תְּקַלֵּ֖ל עָשִׁ֑יר כִּ֣י ע֤וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ יוֹלִ֣יךְ אֶת־הַקּ֔וֹל וּבַ֥עַל *הכנפים **כְּנָפַ֖יִם יַגֵּ֥יד דָּבָֽר׃ Ecclesiastes Ecl 10:20 Fluche dem König nicht in deinem Herzen und fluche dem Reichen nicht in deiner Schlafkammer; denn die Vögel des Himmels führen die Stimme fort, und die Fittiche haben, sagen's weiter.(dhs) Ecl 10:20 Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 11:1 ============ top of the page
