Today's Date: ======= Ecclesiastes 4:1 ============ Ecl 4:1 Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and on the side of their oppressors was power, but they had no one to comfort them. (nas) Ecl 4:1 καὶ ἐπέστρεψα ἐγὼ καὶ εἶδον σὺν πάσας τὰς συκοφαντίας τὰς γινομένας ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον καὶ ἰδοὺ δάκρυον τῶν συκοφαντουμένων καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς παρακαλῶν καὶ ἀπὸ χειρὸς συκοφαντούντων αὐτοὺς ἰσχύς καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς παρακαλῶν (lxx) Ecl 4:1 [Verti me ad alia, et vidi calumnias quæ sub sole geruntur, et lacrimas innocentium, et neminem consolatorem, nec posse resistere eorum violentiæ, cunctorum auxilio destitutos,(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:1 So I turned and considered all the oppressions that are wrought vnder the sunne, and beholde the teares of the oppressed, and none comforteth them: and lo, the strength is of the hand of them that oppresse them, & none comforteth them.(Geneva) Ecl 4:1 Ich wandte mich um und sah an alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der Sonne; und siehe, da waren die Tränen derer, so Unrecht litten und hatten keinen Tröster; und die ihnen Unrecht taten, waren zu mächtig, daß sie keinen Tröster haben konnten.(dhs) Ecl 4:1 Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun: And look! (nas) Ecl 4:2 καὶ ἐπῄνεσα ἐγὼ σὺν τοὺς τεθνηκότας τοὺς ἤδη ἀποθανόντας ὑπὲρ τοὺς ζῶντας ὅσοι αὐτοὶ ζῶσιν ἕως τοῦ νῦν (lxx) Ecl 4:2 et laudavi magis mortuos quam viventes;(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:2 Wherefore I praysed the dead which now are dead, aboue the liuing, which are yet aliue.(Geneva) Ecl 4:2 Da lobte ich die Toten, die schon gestorben waren, mehr denn die Lebendigen, die noch das Leben hatten;(dhs) Ecl 4:2 Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead, More than the living who are still alive.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:3 ============ Ecl 4:3 But better off than both of them is the one who has never existed, who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun. (nas) Ecl 4:3 καὶ ἀγαθὸς ὑπὲρ τοὺς δύο τούτους ὅστις οὔπω ἐγένετο ὃς οὐκ εἶδεν σὺν τὸ ποίημα τὸ πονηρὸν τὸ πεποιημένον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον (lxx) Ecl 4:3 et feliciorem utroque judicavi qui necdum natus est, nec vidit mala quæ sub sole fiunt.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:3 And I count him better then them both, which hath not yet bin: for he hath not seene the euill workes which are wrought vnder the sunne.(Geneva) Ecl 4:3 und besser als alle beide ist, der noch nicht ist und des Bösen nicht innewird, das unter der Sonne geschieht.(dhs) Ecl 4:3 Yet, better than both is he who has never existed, Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:4 ============ Ecl 4:4 I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a man and his neighbor. This too is vanity and striving after wind. (nas) Ecl 4:4 καὶ εἶδον ἐγὼ σὺν πάντα τὸν μόχθον καὶ σὺν πᾶσαν ἀνδρείαν τοῦ ποιήματος ὅτι αὐτὸ ζῆλος ἀνδρὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ ἑταίρου αὐτοῦ καί γε τοῦτο ματαιότης καὶ προαίρεσις πνεύματος (lxx) Ecl 4:4 Rursum contemplatus sum omnes labores hominum, et industrias animadverti patere invidiæ proximi; et in hoc ergo vanitas et cura superflua est.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:4 Also I beheld all trauaile, & all perfection of workes that this is ye enuie of a man against his neighbour: this also is vanitie & vexation of spirit.(Geneva) Ecl 4:4 Ich sah an Arbeit und Geschicklichkeit in allen Sachen; da neidet einer den andern. Das ist auch eitel und Haschen nach dem Wind.(dhs) Ecl 4:4 Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:5 ============ Ecl 4:5 The fool folds his hands and consumes his own flesh. (nas) Ecl 4:5 ὁ ἄφρων περιέλαβεν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔφαγεν τὰς σάρκας αὐτοῦ (lxx) Ecl 4:5 Stultus complicat manus suas, et comedit carnes suas, dicens:(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:5 The foole foldeth his hands, and eateth vp his owne flesh.(Geneva) Ecl 4:5 Ein Narr schlägt die Finger ineinander und verzehrt sich selbst.(dhs) Ecl 4:5 The fool folds his hands And consumes his own flesh.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:6 ============ Ecl 4:6 One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind. (nas) Ecl 4:6 ἀγαθὸν πλήρωμα δρακὸς ἀναπαύσεως ὑπὲρ πλήρωμα δύο δρακῶν μόχθου καὶ προαιρέσεως πνεύματος (lxx) Ecl 4:6 Melior est pugillus cum requie, quam plena utraque manus cum labore et afflictione animi.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:6 Better is an handfull with quietnesse, then two handfuls with labour and vexation of spirit.(Geneva) Ecl 4:6 Es ist besser eine Handvoll mit Ruhe denn beide Fäuste voll mit Mühe und Haschen nach Wind.(dhs) Ecl 4:6 Better a handful with quietness Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:7 ============ Ecl 4:7 Then I looked again at vanity under the sun. (nas) Ecl 4:7 καὶ ἐπέστρεψα ἐγὼ καὶ εἶδον ματαιότητα ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον (lxx) Ecl 4:7 Considerans, reperi et aliam vanitatem sub sole.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:7 Againe I returned, and sawe vanitie vnder the sunne.(Geneva) Ecl 4:7 Ich wandte mich um und sah die Eitelkeit unter der Sonne.(dhs) Ecl 4:7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:8 ============ Ecl 4:8 There was a certain man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches and he never asked, "And for whom am I laboring and depriving myself of pleasure?" This too is vanity and it is a grievous task. (nas) Ecl 4:8 ἔστιν εἷς καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν δεύτερος καί γε υἱὸς καὶ ἀδελφὸς οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτῷ καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν περασμὸς τῷ παντὶ μόχθῳ αὐτοῦ καί γε ὀφθαλμὸς αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐμπίπλαται πλούτου καὶ τίνι ἐγὼ μοχθῶ καὶ στερίσκω τὴν ψυχήν μου ἀπὸ ἀγαθωσύνης καί γε τοῦτο ματαιότης καὶ περισπασμὸς πονηρός ἐστιν (lxx) Ecl 4:8 Unus est, et secundum non habet, non filium, non fratrem, et tamen laborare non cessat, nec satiantur oculi ejus divitiis; nec recogitat, dicens: Cui laboro, et fraudo animam meam bonis? In hoc quoque vanitas est et afflictio pessima.]~(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:8 There is one alone, & there is not a second, which hath neither sonne nor brother, yet is there none end of all his trauaile, neither can his eye be satisfied with riches: neither doeth he thinke, For whome doe I trauaile and defraude my soule of pleasure? this also is vanitie, and this is an euill trauaile.(Geneva) Ecl 4:8 Es ist ein einzelner, und nicht selbander, und hat weder Kind noch Bruder; doch ist seines Arbeitens kein Ende, und seine Augen werden Reichtums nicht satt. Wem arbeite ich doch und breche meiner Seele ab? Das ist auch eitel und eine böse Mühe.(dhs) Ecl 4:8 There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks, "For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?" This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:9 ============ Ecl 4:9 Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. (nas) Ecl 4:9 ἀγαθοὶ οἱ δύο ὑπὲρ τὸν ἕνα οἷς ἔστιν αὐτοῖς μισθὸς ἀγαθὸς ἐν μόχθῳ αὐτῶν (lxx) Ecl 4:9 [Melius est ergo duos esse simul quam unum; habent enim emolumentum societatis suæ.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:9 Two are better then one: for they haue better wages for their labour.(Geneva) Ecl 4:9 So ist's ja besser zwei als eins; denn sie genießen doch ihrer Arbeit wohl.(dhs) Ecl 4:9 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:10 ============ Ecl 4:10 For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. (nas) Ecl 4:10 ὅτι ἐὰν πέσωσιν ὁ εἷς ἐγερεῖ τὸν μέτοχον αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐαὶ αὐτῷ τῷ ἑνί ὅταν πέσῃ καὶ μὴ ᾖ δεύτερος τοῦ ἐγεῖραι αὐτόν (lxx) Ecl 4:10 Si unus ceciderit, ab altero fulcietur. Væ soli, quia cum ceciderit, non habet sublevantem se.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:10 For if they fal, the one wil lift vp his felow: but wo vnto him that is alone: for he falleth, and there is not a second to lift him vp.(Geneva) Ecl 4:10 Fällt ihrer einer so hilft ihm sein Gesell auf. Weh dem, der allein ist! Wenn er fällt, so ist keiner da, der ihm aufhelfe.(dhs) Ecl 4:10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:11 ============ Ecl 4:11 Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? (nas) Ecl 4:11 καί γε ἐὰν κοιμηθῶσιν δύο καὶ θέρμη αὐτοῖς καὶ ὁ εἷς πῶς θερμανθῇ (lxx) Ecl 4:11 Et si dormierint duo, fovebuntur mutuo; unus quomodo calefiet?(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:11 Also if two sleepe together, then shall they haue heate: but to one how should there be heate?(Geneva) Ecl 4:11 Auch wenn zwei beieinander liegen, wärmen sie sich; wie kann ein einzelner warm werden?(dhs) Ecl 4:11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:12 ============ Ecl 4:12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. (nas) Ecl 4:12 καὶ ἐὰν ἐπικραταιωθῇ ὁ εἷς οἱ δύο στήσονται κατέναντι αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ σπαρτίον τὸ ἔντριτον οὐ ταχέως ἀπορραγήσεται (lxx) Ecl 4:12 Et si quispiam prævaluerit contra unum, duo resistunt ei; funiculus triplex difficile rumpitur.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:12 And if one ouercome him, two shall stand against him: and a threefolde coard is not easily broken.(Geneva) Ecl 4:12 Einer mag überwältigt werden, aber zwei mögen widerstehen; und eine dreifältige Schnur reißt nicht leicht entzwei.(dhs) Ecl 4:12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:13 ============ Ecl 4:13 A poor yet wise lad is better than an old and foolish king who no longer knows how to receive instruction. (nas) Ecl 4:13 ἀγαθὸς παῖς πένης καὶ σοφὸς ὑπὲρ βασιλέα πρεσβύτερον καὶ ἄφρονα ὃς οὐκ ἔγνω τοῦ προσέχειν ἔτι (lxx) Ecl 4:13 Melior est puer pauper et sapiens, rege sene et stulto, qui nescit prævidere in posterum.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:13 Better is a poore and wise childe, then an olde and foolish King, which will no more be admonished.(Geneva) Ecl 4:13 Ein armes Kind, das weise ist, ist besser denn ein alter König, der ein Narr ist und weiß nicht sich zu hüten.(dhs) Ecl 4:13 Better a poor and wise youth Than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:14 ============ Ecl 4:14 For he has come out of prison to become king, even though he was born poor in his kingdom. (nas) Ecl 4:14 ὅτι ἐξ οἴκου τῶν δεσμίων ἐξελεύσεται τοῦ βασιλεῦσαι ὅτι καί γε ἐν βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐγεννήθη πένης (lxx) Ecl 4:14 Quod de carcere catenisque interdum quis egrediatur ad regnum; et alius, natus in regno, inopia consumatur.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:14 For out of the prison he commeth forth to reigne: when as he that is borne in his kingdome, is made poore.(Geneva) Ecl 4:14 Es kommt einer aus dem Gefängnis zum Königreich; und einer, der in seinem Königreich geboren ist, verarmt.(dhs) Ecl 4:14 For he comes out of prison to be king, Although he was born poor in his kingdom.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:15 ============ Ecl 4:15 I have seen all the living under the sun throng to the side of the second lad who replaces him. (nas) Ecl 4:15 εἶδον σὺν πάντας τοὺς ζῶντας τοὺς περιπατοῦντας ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον μετὰ τοῦ νεανίσκου τοῦ δευτέρου ὃς στήσεται ἀντ᾽ αὐτοῦ (lxx) Ecl 4:15 Vidi cunctos viventes qui ambulant sub sole cum adolescente secundo, qui consurget pro eo.(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:15 I behelde all the liuing, which walke vnder the sunne, with the second childe, which shall stand vp in his place.(Geneva) Ecl 4:15 Und ich sah, daß alle Lebendigen unter der Sonne wandelten bei dem andern, dem Kinde, das an jenes Statt sollte aufkommen.(dhs) Ecl 4:15 I saw all the living who walk under the sun; They were with the second youth who stands in his place.(nkjv) ======= Ecclesiastes 4:16 ============ Ecl 4:16 There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them, and even the ones who will come later will not be happy with him, for this too is vanity and striving after wind. (nas) Ecl 4:16 οὐκ ἔστιν περασμὸς τῷ παντὶ λαῷ τοῖς πᾶσιν ὅσοι ἐγένοντο ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν καί γε οἱ ἔσχατοι οὐκ εὐφρανθήσονται ἐν αὐτῷ ὅτι καί γε τοῦτο ματαιότης καὶ προαίρεσις πνεύματος (lxx) Ecl 4:16 Infinitus numerus est populi omnium qui fuerunt ante eum, et qui postea futuri sunt non lætabuntur in eo; sed et hoc vanitas et afflictio spiritus.]~(vulgate) Ecclesiastes 4:16 There is none ende of all the people, nor of all that were before them, and they that come after, shall not reioyce in him: surely this is also vanitie and vexation of spirit.(Geneva) Ecl 4:16 Und des Volks, das vor ihm ging, war kein Ende und des, das ihm nachging; und wurden sein doch nicht froh. (nas) Ecl 5:1 φύλαξον πόδα σου ἐν ᾧ ἐὰν πορεύῃ εἰς οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐγγὺς τοῦ ἀκούειν ὑπὲρ δόμα τῶν ἀφρόνων θυσία σου ὅτι οὔκ εἰσιν εἰδότες τοῦ ποιῆσαι κακόν (lxx) Ecl 5:1 [Custodi pedem tuum ingrediens domum Dei, et appropinqua ut audias. Multo enim melior est obedientia quam stultorum victimæ, qui nesciunt quid faciunt mali.](vulgate) Ecclesiastes 5:1 (4:17) Take heede to thy foote when thou entrest into the House of God, and be more neere to heare then to giue the sacrifice of fooles: for they knowe not that they doe euil.(Geneva) Ecl 5:1 Bewahre deinen Fuß, wenn du zum Hause Gottes gehst, und komme, daß du hörst.
