A liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.(nas) Pro 17:4 κακὸς ὑπακούει γλώσσης παρανόμων δίκαιος δὲ οὐ προσέχει χείλεσιν ψευδέσιν (lxx) Pro 17:4 Malus obedit linguæ iniquæ, et fallax obtemperat labiis mendacibus.(vulgate) 4 ׃17 מֵ֭רַע מַקְשִׁ֣יב עַל־שְׂפַת־אָ֑וֶן שֶׁ֥קֶר מֵ֝זִין עַל־לְשׁ֥וֹן הַוֺּֽת׃ Proverbs Pro 17:4 Ein Böser achtet auf böse Mäuler, und ein Falscher gehorcht den schädlichen Zungen.(dhs) Pro 17:4 An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:5 ============ Pro 17:5 He who mocks the poor taunts his Maker; He who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.(nas) Pro 17:5 ὁ καταγελῶν πτωχοῦ παροξύνει τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν ὁ δὲ ἐπιχαίρων ἀπολλυμένῳ οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται ὁ δὲ ἐπισπλαγχνιζόμενος ἐλεηθήσεται (lxx) Pro 17:5 Qui despicit pauperem exprobrat factori ejus, et qui ruina lætatur alterius non erit impunitus.(vulgate) 5 ׃17 לֹעֵ֣ג לָ֭רָשׁ חֵרֵ֣ף עֹשֵׂ֑הוּ שָׂמֵ֥חַ לְ֝אֵ֗יד לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה׃ Proverbs Pro 17:5 Wer des Dürftigen spottet, der höhnt desselben Schöpfer; und wer sich über eines andern Unglück freut, der wird nicht ungestraft bleiben.(dhs) Pro 17:5 He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:6 ============ Pro 17:6 Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers.(nas) Pro 17:6 στέφανος γερόντων τέκνα τέκνων καύχημα δὲ τέκνων πατέρες αὐτῶν Pro 17:6 Corona senum filii filiorum, et gloria filiorum patres eorum.(vulgate) 6 ׃17 עֲטֶ֣רֶת זְ֭קֵנִים בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֑ים וְתִפְאֶ֖רֶת בָּנִ֣ים אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ Proverbs Pro 17:6 Der Alten Krone sind Kindeskinder, und der Kinder Ehre sind ihre Väter.(dhs) Pro 17:6 Children's children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:7 ============ Pro 17:7 Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool, Much less are lying lips to a prince.(nas) Pro 17:7 οὐχ ἁρμόσει ἄφρονι χείλη πιστὰ οὐδὲ δικαίῳ χείλη ψευδῆ (lxx) Pro 17:7 Non decent stultum verba composita, nec principem labium mentiens.(vulgate) 7 ׃17 לֹא־נָאוָ֣ה לְנָבָ֣ל שְׂפַת־יֶ֑תֶר אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־לְנָדִ֥יב שְׂפַת־שָֽׁקֶר׃ Proverbs Pro 17:7 Es steht einem Narren nicht wohl an, von hohen Dingen reden, viel weniger einem Fürsten, daß er gern lügt.(dhs) Pro 17:7 Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool, Much less lying lips to a prince.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:8 ============ Pro 17:8 A bribe is a charm in the sight of its owner; wo er sich hin kehrt, ist er klug geachtet.(dhs) Pro 17:8 A present is a precious stone in the eyes of its possessor; Wherever he turns, he prospers.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:9 ============ Pro 17:9 He who conceals a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.(nas) Pro 17:9 ὃς κρύπτει ἀδικήματα ζητεῖ φιλίαν ὃς δὲ μισεῖ κρύπτειν διίστησιν φίλους καὶ οἰκείους (lxx) Pro 17:9 Qui celat delictum quærit amicitias; qui altero sermone repetit, separat fœderatos.(vulgate) 9 ׃17 מְֽכַסֶּה־פֶּ֭שַׁע מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אַהֲבָ֑ה וְשֹׁנֶ֥ה בְ֝דָבָ֗ר מַפְרִ֥יד אַלּֽוּף׃ Proverbs Pro 17:9 Wer Sünde zudeckt, der macht Freundschaft; wer aber die Sache aufrührt, der macht Freunde uneins.(dhs) Pro 17:9 He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:10 ============ Pro 17:10 A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding Than a hundred blows into a fool.(nas) Pro 17:10 συντρίβει ἀπειλὴ καρδίαν φρονίμου ἄφρων δὲ μαστιγωθεὶς οὐκ αἰσθάνεται (lxx) Pro 17:10 Plus proficit correptio apud prudentem, quam centum plagæ apud stultum.(vulgate) 10 ׃17 תֵּ֣חַת גְּעָרָ֣ה בְמֵבִ֑ין מֵהַכּ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל מֵאָֽה׃ Proverbs Pro 17:10 Schelten bringt mehr ein an dem Verständigen denn hundert Schläge an dem Narren.(dhs) Pro 17:10 Rebuke is more effective for a wise man Than a hundred blows on a fool.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:11 ============ Pro 17:11 A rebellious man seeks only evil, So a cruel messenger will be sent against him.(nas) Pro 17:11 ἀντιλογίας ἐγείρει πᾶς κακός ὁ δὲ κύριος ἄγγελον ἀνελεήμονα ἐκπέμψει αὐτῷ (lxx) Pro 17:11 Semper jurgia quærit malus: angelus autem crudelis mittetur contra eum.(vulgate) 11 ׃17 אַךְ־מְרִ֥י יְבַקֶּשׁ־רָ֑ע וּמַלְאָ֥ךְ אַ֝כְזָרִ֗י יְשֻׁלַּח־בּֽוֹ׃ Proverbs Pro 17:11 Ein bitterer Mensch trachtet, eitel Schaden zu tun; und wer seine Türe hoch macht, ringt nach Einsturz.(dhs) Pro 17:19 He who loves transgression loves strife, And he who exalts his gate seeks destruction.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:20 ============ Pro 17:20 He who has a crooked mind finds no good, And he who is perverted in his language falls into evil.(nas) Pro 17:20 ὁ δὲ σκληροκάρδιος οὐ συναντᾷ ἀγαθοῖς ἀνὴρ εὐμετάβολος γλώσσῃ ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά (lxx) Pro 17:20 Qui perversi cordis est non inveniet bonum, et qui vertit linguam incidet in malum.(vulgate) 20 ׃17 עִקֶּשׁ־לֵ֭ב לֹ֣א יִמְצָא־ט֑וֹב וְנֶהְפָּ֥ךְ בִּ֝לְשׁוֹנ֗וֹ יִפּ֥וֹל בְּרָעָֽה׃ Proverbs Pro 17:20 Ein verkehrtes Herz findet nichts Gutes; und der verkehrter Zunge ist, wird in Unglück fallen.(dhs) Pro 17:20 He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil.(nkjv) ======= Proverbs 17:21 ============ Pro 17:21 He who sires a fool does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy.(nas) Pro 17:21 καρδία δὲ ἄφρονος ὀδύνη τῷ κεκτημένῳ αὐτήν οὐκ εὐφραίνεται πατὴρ ἐπὶ υἱῷ ἀπαιδεύτῳ υἱὸς δὲ φρόνιμος εὐφραίνει μητέρα αὐτοῦ (lxx) Pro 17:21 Natus est stultus in ignominiam suam;
